Not Designed For This World.

That wasn’t your limit. That was what was left after the tax.

This should not be this hard.

Something is taking from the account before the day really starts.

Small things costing more than they look like they should.

Rest that does not quite bring you back.

Knowing what to do but not being able to sustain it.

That pattern is not a character flaw.

That is a ledger that has never been read accurately.

The Usual Explanations

When things are not sustainable, the explanation is discipline.

When rest does not restore, the explanation is burnout.

When output shifts, the explanation is character.

Try harder.

Push through.

Be more consistent.

That approach often increases the cost.

What Is Actually Happening

Something is taking from the account.

Across two columns.

The first column is the one you know about.

Managing yourself.

Navigating other people.

Working around systems not built for how you operate.

The second column is the one that never appears as a charge.

The strategies you developed to get through those things.

They kept everything functioning.

They do not show up on the ledger.

But they take from the same account.

By the time the balance is obviously wrong, the explanation is usually the person holding the empty account.

It was not.

Something was taking.

Without consent. Without disclosure.

Without ever showing up as a charge that could be named.

Not Everything That Feels Personal Starts There

Some of it sits in personal patterns. Pacing, habits, regulation, the way you move through a day.

Some of it sits in interactions. Expectations, communication, what it costs to be in shared spaces.

Some of it sits in structures. Policies, systems, economic limits, access barriers that create extra steps before anything else can happen.

Where it begins matters. Because working in the wrong place does not reduce the taking. It adds to it.

There Are Three Ways In.

1. Take The Misfit Tax Ledger

If this is personal.

Start with seeing where the taking is actually coming from.

2. Explore The Books

If this is about building the capacity to change patterns over time.

3. Speaking & Education

If you are responsible for others and want to fix the conditions, not the person.

What This Work Does.

Identify where the taking is coming from.

Separate what is yours to shift from what belongs to the conditions around you.

Then act where leverage actually exists.

Reduce what is taking unnecessarily.

Protect what is still working.

Restore access to what was always there.

Add what the conditions were missing.

When the taking reduces,

you get to more of what matters to you in your life.

Consistently.

Without collapse afterwards.

Structural limits may still exist.

Reaching one does not mean something is wrong.

THE
MISFIT
TAX LEDGER

No diagnosis.

No labels.

No ranking.

It maps where the taking is coming from and which source is driving most of the cost.

It gives language for patterns that may have felt personal when they were not.

It shows where change would actually make a difference.

I recognise that sovereignty has never been ceded. These always were, and always will be, Aboriginal lands.

I honour the enduring strength, knowledge, and cultural practices of First Nations peoples, and acknowledge that this work exists on Country that has held wisdom, connection, and community care for tens of thousands of years.
